Biddeford Savings is Adopting Families

Nov 18, 2010

Biddeford, Maine --- The employees at all branches of Biddeford Savings are once again completing a year-long effort to raise money for their “Adopt-A-Family” program. The program is helping area families and the residents of SouthRidge Rehabilitation and Living Center enjoy a happier holiday season.

During this Thanksgiving season, Biddeford Savings will provide food baskets for families in the Biddeford, Waterboro and Scarborough area and in December, the bank will be providing holiday gifts for families in the these same communities. Bank employees, customers and members of the community can still get involved in the Adopt-A-Family program by stopping in at one of the Bank’s four branch offices and helping to provide holiday gifts for the families in the three communities.

On Saturday, December 11th, the group will be hosting a holiday party at the Southridge Rehabilitation and Living Center in Biddeford, providing entertainment, gifts and holiday cheers to all of the 111 residents. (It is rumored that Santa may also make an appearance).

Joan Lonsdale, one of the bank employees who organizes the gift and food drives, said that the Adopt-A-Family Program sprung from conversations that she and her co-workers had in early 2004.

“It’s hard to believe that we are in our 7th year. We wanted to do something that would have a direct impact on the people of our community, those who really needed help”, Lonsdale said. “Management supported the idea, and has given us lots of leeway in organizing the gift and food drives. It is a Bank-wide involvement. It is very rewarding when we make the deliveries.”

Besides Lonsdale, the other bank’s Adopt-A-Family employee committee members include Nicole Dube, Shirley Fortier, Maria Griffin, Rebecca Guerin, Judy Huot, Doris LaBrecque and Lucy Vanasse.

Lonsdale said she and the committee members maintain the effort all year long and try to keep it fun using a variety of fundraising techniques. In the past they have held car-washes, casual dress days, bottle drives, yard sales, attended craft fairs, and selling bears.

This year they participated in the 10th Annual Saco Spirit Pumpkin Harvest Festival. She said that customers also get into the spirit of the program and that “the enthusiasm is contagious.”
