To the rescue: Music on Main Street will continue
Jun 4, 2009
(Biddeford, Maine) - Biddeford Savings has good news for music fans: the bank has made sure the popular Music on Main Street concert series will take place again for the sixth straight summer, thanks to a new partnership it was able to put in place.
Left without a vendor to serve a barbecue lunch after Pit Boss of Maine retired this winter, the series had been in jeopardy. But the bank has successfully recruited the Old Fashioned Lobster Bake and BBQ Co. of Kennebunk to step in to fill the void, thereby enabling the concerts to take place and continue the mission to help local charities.
“This is great news for downtown Biddeford-Saco, and great news for local charities,” said Charles Petersen, president and CEO of Biddeford Savings. “It’s events like these that highlight the vibrancy of our downtowns.”
Biddeford Savings will again be the major sponsor of the concerts, which began in 2004. The bank conceived of the idea as a way to help local charities, but also to draw residents and visitors to Biddeford’s downtown, in cooperation with the Heart of Biddeford, a booster organization. Biddeford Savings is the largest financial contributor to the series, and also recruits the musicians and organizes the concerts. It hires a public relations specialist to promote them, and encourages its employees to volunteer their time at the concerts.
“We have a real team of go-getters, and everybody has a lot of fun. Customers are always asking us when the music’s coming back,” Petersen said.
Petersen estimates concert-goers have contributed approximately $25,000 to local charities since the series began. This year’s concerts will again be in the small green space adjacent to the bank at 254 Main Street. Four weekly concerts will take place every Thursday starting July 9. All shows will begin at 11:45 a.m. and end at 1:00 p.m. The music is free, but if music fans want to enjoy a BBQ lunch for $5, all proceeds from lunch sales will be donated directly to local charities.
The new BBQ company will be generously donating all its time and labor to the cause. Mark Nedeau, who along with his wife Giselle own and operate the Old Fashioned Lobster Bake and BBQ Co. (http://nedbakes.com), said he’s happy to continue where Pit Boss left off.
“Giselle and I believe very strongly in doing things like this,” Nedeau said. “Music on Main Street gives people a gathering place. The music’s good, the food’s good, and being able to help people who really need it is icing on the cake. This community has been very good to us, so it’s our way of returning the favor.”
Petersen said a schedule of this year’s musical performers will be announced soon.
